Meat originated with the chance discovery of a stack of cheap, overused bar-hostess chairs abandoned on the pavement near the studio. They were gathered and positioned with their backs to the viewer, withholding what cannot be seen, resisting the critical gaze, allowing them – so to speak – to protect themselves. For each of the five chairs a unique hand-woven mohair article was prepared, warm and softly textured.

The work is a denunciation of the prostitution industry: of the exploitation of women’s vulnerability, and of the dehumanizing objectification and instrumentalization of the female body. At the same time, there is no wish to pronounce judgment on any woman’s autonomy over her own body or choices. The work is, at most, a futile gesture of respect toward lives largely unseen – their hardships and their dreams
