Merecido recalls a painful and terrifying childhood memory. In place of the seductive image of a high-heeled shoe, we encounter an ordinary woman’s everyday shoe – yet marked by unmistakably childlike features. What should have been a source of stability and support becomes, instead, an instrument of harm and violence.

This sculpture belongs to the artist`s ongoing concern with adverse childhood conditions – alongside Matter, Failure, With This Ring, Elegy, and others – although the experience of abuse and breached trust is, of course, not limited to the childhoods of women.
